Oslo, Deichman Tøyen

About the event

The selection process for the UN’s next Secretary-General is underway, at a time when the UN faces major challenges and is in the midst of an extensive reform process. We will discuss potential candidates, the power dynamics behind the scenes, and the challenges awaiting the person who will take the helm of the UN in 2027.

Who might become the organization’s next leader? How does the selection process actually work? What qualities are required of the UN’s next Secretary-General? Will it finally be a woman? And does it really matter, in practice, who gets the job?

Join us for a discussion featuring:
🔷 Hilde Frafjord Johnson, Senior Advisor at the European Institute of Peace and former UN envoy to South Sudan
🔷 Emil André Erstad, Editor-in-Chief of *Panorama*
🔷 Simon Reid-Henry, Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO)
🔷 Toril-Iren Pedersen, Director of the UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance

The discussion will be moderated by Catharina Bu, Secretary-General of the United Nations Association of Norway (FN-sambandet).
