Registration in the Brønnøysund Register Centre

Are you a leader or a member of a board that needs to register an organization number in the Brønnøysund Registers? Here we explain how to do it.

Preparations before you start

Before you start filling out the notification of registration in the Register of Entities, it is a good idea to make some simple preparations. What you need to have in place is:

  • Your own login information from Altinn (for example, BankID on your mobile)
  • Attachments as files on your computer - either as scanned copies or as documents.

You should have these documents available:

  • Articles of association

  • Signed foundation document, if available. If not, you can use a copy of the minutes from the last annual meeting or a document from the county association/central organization that shows that the association is approved as a local association
  • Annual meeting minutes that show the election of the people who sit on the board. For new associations, this is usually the foundation document.
  • Name and personal identification number of a contact person that Brønnøysund Registers can use when contacting the association (usually the leader)
  • Name and personal identification number of everyone who sits on the board

Registration procedure

  • Go to www.brreg.no. Click on "Register", then "Team and association". If you want to update or change information, you can follow this description.
  • Log in with your personal information.
  • Select "Register new entity"
  • On the question "Organizational form" select "Association/team"
  • Here you can also choose whether you want to register in the Volunteer Register. Registering your association here is free and gives you the opportunity to earn some extra income through Grasrotandelen (Norwegian Tipping). It is not possible to only register in the Volunteer Register.
  • Answer "no" to the question whether you should register in the Register of Business Enterprises

What should I write?

Name and address

  • Name: Make sure that the name you enter is exactly the same as what is in the articles of association.
  • If this is the first time you are trying to register, skip the question about a temporary organization number.
  • Enter the association's address. If you do not have access to a permanent location, you must provide a private address, for example the address of the association's leader. Remember c/o.
  • If you have access to mail to, for example, the educational institution, enter it.

Contact information

  • Fill in contact information, preferably to the leader.
  • If you would like random advertising and to be contacted by telemarketers, check the box to indicate that you want to provide contact information.

Association activities

Describe what you do so that an outsider will understand it. Feel free to use sentences from the statutes, but think clarity over big words.

Date of foundation, employees and purpose

  • Enter the date of your foundation meeting (this is stated in the minutes of the foundation meeting)
  • Answer no to the question about employees
  • Choose purpose.

Power of attorney
Most likely, you have not given power of attorney to anyone. Press "next".

Registration in the Volunteer Register
This only appears if you selected this earlier in the registration.

  • Select "yes" to participate in the grassroots share

  • Since you have not received an account number yet (that is why you are registering now), you can leave the account number blank. Remember to enter this when you have arranged a bank account!
  • Select "no" to report accounting information, as this is not necessary.
  • Select "no" to register the articles of association, as this is not necessary.
  • Select the categories that suit you best.

Notification and signing

  • Enter the email address or phone number of the person registering the association.
  • Select who will sign the form.

Summary
Review the information you have entered. Note that you are not finished yet! At the top left there are two tabs: "message" and "attachment". Now click on "attachment".

Upload attachment

  • In the drop-down list for attachment type, first select "foundation document". Upload the correct file.
  • Once the file has been uploaded, you must press "next" before uploading more. Then you press "add more attachments". You are now "back" on the upload page, but on the left side it says that the foundation document is ready for submission.
  • Now select "articles of association" and upload your articles of association.
  • Press "next" and "add more attachments".
  • You must also upload a document showing the election of the registered board. Upload the minutes from the founding meeting again.
  • Go back to the tab "Notification"
  • Click "check notification and attachments", and see if you are notified that something is missing. If so, you must fix it.
  • Now the registration can be submitted

All board members who were added when you registered the association must approve this before the Brønnøysund Register can process the registration. It is difficult to say exactly how

Change the name of the association

If you want to change the name of the association, it is smart to follow this list of tasks.

Change the statutes

The association's name is set out in the statutes, and the first thing you must do is therefore change the statutes. Here's how you proceed:

  • Call an extraordinary general meeting in accordance with the statutes.
  • The general meeting must adopt the new name proposal. Pay attention to the precise provisions in your statutes regarding changes to the statutes (both in terms of the number of members who must be present and how many must vote. It is most common to have a 2/3 majority).

Remember to keep minutes/protocols and have the relevant people approve (sign) it.

Update relevant registers
All registers where the association's name is registered must be updated. Here is a list of different registers and affiliations that many associations have and how you go about changing them.

Register the name change in the Brønnøysund Register

  • Go to the Brønnøysund Registers
  • Click on "Clubs and associations" and select "Coordinated register notification" under "Other topics"
  • Click on "Register or change company/organization"
  • Log in with your ID
  • A window will appear asking "What do you want to do? Check "Change or add new information" and click on "Next"
  • You will be asked for an organization number. Enter the organization number of your association and then click on "Get". Check that the correct association is loaded. Then click on "Next".
  • Now you can choose what to change. Click on "Name of the association" and then next. Follow the information on the screen. Remember to attach the minutes from the general meeting and the updated articles of association.

Contact and inform

  • Contact your bank to change the name on the association account.
  • If you are affiliated with a part of the educational institution, for example by being a line association, you should inform the department or faculty about the name change.

Necessary updates on My Association

  • Change the name of the association to "My Association". Also remember the English translation. Remember to review the descriptions of the association and make necessary changes.
  • Update the new statutes in all relevant places. Remember to upload them to "My Association".
  • Update your contact information and inform other relevant places about the name change, especially with suppliers, support schemes and partners.

Social media and website
It is important to change the name on social media and website.

  • Contact any supplier of websites or email addresses to be informed about the options you have.
  • Change the name on their Facebook page.
  • Inform the website, social media, and other relevant places about the name change.
